What Is Random Number Generator?
The certified algorithm that selects each spin's outcome. On a regulated slot it runs continuously, and the instant you press the button decides which value is taken — so the result is fixed before the reels have finished spinning. Each outcome is drawn independently, which means nothing about the previous spin changes the next one.
Why this matters for advantage play
The RNG is why most of a casino floor is untouchable. If every spin is independent there is no pattern to read, no machine that is due, and no opening for skill. Advantage play does not beat the RNG; it works on the parts of a game the RNG does not govern — counters, banked progress and progressive pots that persist between spins and between players, and which are the accumulated residue of money already spent. A machine having an RNG does not establish that it is unbeatable, and a long losing run does not establish that it is about to turn.

Virtual Reel
A mapping layer between the generator's output and the reel positions a player sees. The game draws from a virtual list that can hold many more stops than the visible reel, then maps the result onto a displayed position. Several virtual stops can point at the same visible symbol, so symbols that look equally common are not.
Reel Strip
The ordered list of symbols on a single reel, as defined in the game's maths. On a video slot the strip is a table in software rather than a printed band, and it is usually far longer than the few positions visible on screen. Its length and composition set how often each symbol can come up.
Par Sheet
The manufacturer's maths document for a slot: reel strips, symbol weights, hit frequency, the pay table and the theoretical payback for each certified configuration. It is written for the regulator, the independent test lab and the operator. It is not published to players, and casinos are generally under no obligation to show one.
Persistent State
A game feature that carries over between player sessions, such as collected wilds, counter values, or bonus progress. Persistent state mechanics are what make advantage play on slots possible — without them, every spin would be independent and always -EV.
Near Miss
A losing outcome displayed so that it looks close to a win — two jackpot symbols landing while the third stops just off the payline. The result was chosen before the reels finished moving, so nothing was nearly anything; the closeness lives in the presentation, not in the outcome.
Common questions about random number generator
No. Certified generators cycle continuously whether or not anyone is at the machine, which is why two players pressing a fraction of a second apart get different results. It is also why there is no way to time a press to land a particular outcome.
Not directly. The generator is certified and sealed; what an operator selects is a certified configuration of the game, and in most jurisdictions changing it requires regulator notification and is logged. Neither an operator nor an attendant can reach into a live game and re-weight an individual spin.
Because the spin is not the only thing on the machine. Some games store progress between spins and between players — counters, banked bonuses, progressive pots — and that stored progress is the residue of money other players have spent rather than a fresh draw. Advantage play reads the state, not the spin.
