What Is Loose / Tight?
Folk vocabulary for how much a machine gives back: a loose machine is said to pay generously, a tight one to grind. The underlying variable is real — the same title ships in several certified payback configurations and the operator chooses which to deploy — but in most US jurisdictions the configured return of an individual machine is not disclosed to players, and it cannot be read off the cabinet.
Why this matters for advantage play
Loose and tight is the vocabulary that advantage play exists to replace. The variable is genuine and material, and it is also invisible, which is the whole problem: every folk method for finding it — the machines by the door, the ends of banks, the one nobody has won on all evening — is a pattern read into noise. Some regulators publish payback aggregated by denomination and by market, which is useful for choosing between properties and useless for choosing between cabinets. A machine that has paid well for an hour does not establish that it is loose; it establishes that it has paid well for an hour. The workable answer is to stop guessing at the base game and read the state the machine is showing you.
What “Loose” Actually MeansRelated terms
RTP (Return to Player)
The theoretical percentage of wagered money returned to players over time. A 95% RTP means $95 returned per $100 wagered on average. RTP above 100% means the math is in your favor.
Hold
The percentage of coin-in that the casino keeps. A machine with 8% hold returns 92% to players (92% RTP). Hold is the inverse of RTP.
Hit Frequency
How often a spin returns any win at all, expressed as a share of spins. It says nothing about the size of those wins — a game can pay on a large fraction of spins and still return less than one that pays rarely. Hit frequency and payback are separate dials, set independently by the game's designer.
Par Sheet
The manufacturer's maths document for a slot: reel strips, symbol weights, hit frequency, the pay table and the theoretical payback for each certified configuration. It is written for the regulator, the independent test lab and the operator. It is not published to players, and casinos are generally under no obligation to show one.
House Edge
The casino's built-in mathematical advantage on a game, expressed as a percentage. On a slot with 92% RTP, the house edge is 8%. Advantage play temporarily reverses this edge on specific machines in specific conditions.
Common questions about loose / tight
No. Short-run results are dominated by variance, and the gaps between certified configurations of one title are small enough that separating them would take an impractical number of spins. Anything you can observe across a session is noise, however convincing it looks at the time.
It is the oldest story on the floor and there is no public evidence for it. Placement is driven by traffic flow and floor economics. Treating where a cabinet stands as information about how it is configured is guessing with extra steps.
Most US gaming regulators publish monthly returns aggregated by denomination, and often by property or market. That is genuinely useful for deciding where to play. It is not per-machine, and it cannot tell you how the cabinet in front of you is set.
